The six volumes in this set give a profile of the development of American economic thought, beginning with the journalist and writer Mathew Carey, whose work was radical and argued for reform. Francis Wayland wrote the first widely used textbook of American political economy, a work which was later highly influential in Japan, and was only superseded in the 1860s by Amasa Walker.
Among Mathew Carey's many writings had been a collection (1822) of Essays on Political Economy, one of the earliest of American treatises favouring protection, and Henry C. Carey's life-work was devoted to the propagation of the same theory.
Tench Coxe (1755-1824) supported Hamilton in the establishment of a national bank, but gravitated toward Thomas Jefferson’s emerging political party, convincing Carey to do so as well. Tench Coxe was born in Philadelphia in 1755, into a landed, moneyed and distinguished family.

Henry Charles Carey was a Pennsylvania publisher and author, best known for his commentaries on political economy. Born in Philadelphia, Carey was largely educated by his Irish immigrant father, publisher Mathew Carey, and gradually joined the family publishing firm.
